Activity 4 – Using a Ray Box.

ACTIVITY 4 – Using a Ray Box
What You Need
• Ray Box
• Power Supply
• Cylindrical Lens • Slits
• Coloured Filter
• Mirror
• Selection of Perspex Shapes
• Sheet of White Paper or Card

What To Do
• Connect the ray box to the power supply and set to 12 V ac or dc.
• Switch on the ray box.
• Put the triple slits in the front slot of the ray box.
• Find the position where the cylindrical lens should be placed to give parallel rays.
• Place a convex lens shape on the paper in front of the rays, as shown below.

Try different shapes. In particular, do the following:
• Send white light into a triangular prism, producing a visible spectrum.
• Show that red light is not a mixture of colours.
• Demonstrate total internal reflection.
• Demonstrate refl ection with a mirror.
• Send diverging rays into a convex lens.
