Teaching Health and Safety

There is no way around it, Health and Safety is a bit of a ‘dry’ topic for learners. But there are a few ways you can manage to make things a little more engaging.

Use board games

Here is a game of COSHH Snakes and Ladders.

It is playes as normal except that:

You have to answer a question correctly to go up a ladder

You can escape going down a snake by answering a question correctly.

This version comes as a word document so you can customise it for any subject you choose.

Use card games

Here is part of a set of cards with safety signs on one side and the definition on the back.

They can be used as a ‘pick up’ game whereby the learner has to identify the symbol to pick up the card.

Alternatively, they could be one sided and it could work as a form od ‘snap’ when a sign matches a definition.

Hazard spotting

You can either use an image showing a number of unsafe situations or behaviours or set up a ‘real-life’ mock up where a learner has to go into a room and identify all the unsafe things going on.

There may well be other possibilities. I am currently working on an ‘escape room’ type activity to bring these together. If you have any interesting ideas, please share them.
